Who is eligible to join?

Officers either serving or retired of the following: Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Royal Fleet Auxilary, Womens Royal Naval Service, Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Service, Reserve Forces and Cadet Forces. In addition equivalent Officers of a Foreign Naval Service who have served at Britannia Royal Naval College for more than ten days and wardroom victualled civilians of any nationality are eligible to join. Naval officers’ widows and widowers may also be members.

How much does it cost to belong to the Britannia Association?

Annual Membership is £25 and Life Membership £400. International Life Membership for non-UK Naval services £100

What do I get out of belonging to the Britannia Association?

The Britannia Association is a charitable organisation that allows you to put something back into the training alma mata that is Britannia Royal Naval College. The Britannia Association is a way of making and maintaining contact between past and present alumni thus preserving service traditions. It provides a networking opportunity and also aims to relieve, where appropriate, past and present alumni who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress. There are many other opportunities available to members as shown on the website.

How do I arrange access to Britannia Royal Naval College?

Your Britannia Association membership will enable you, and any guests you may be hosting, to access Britannia Royal Naval College subject to the college programme. Access notification must be made 48 hours prior to your visit via the Britannia Association Office (during Mon-Fri office hours). All guests, over the age of 16, should bring photographic identification.

Can I attend BRNC balls?

Yes. The Britannia Association is allocated tickets for each end of term ball specifically for its members. Balls usually occur in  April, August and December. Britannia Association members normally dine in the Wardroom.
The date of the ball is published on the Britannia Association web site. As a matter of routine all members are informed by e-mail when tickets become available and tickets are secured on receipt of full payment.

What do I routinely receive for my membership subscription?

Membership of the Britannia Association gives access to a variety of opportunities. E-newsletters will keep you up to date with the Britannia Association’s activities, plans and opportunities. (This can be forwarded in hard copy on request.) The annual Britannia Bulletin is a reflection of the past year for the Britannia Association and Britannia Royal Naval College alongside articles of interest to keep members informed. This is posted to your recorded membership address.

What type of activities does the Britannia Association support?Your Title Goes Here

Our stated aim is to make a contribution to the formation and welfare of successive generations of young officers and to promote and contribute to the military efficiency of the Royal Navy. We provide grants from funds held in Trust in support of non publicly funded College activities. To date contributions have been across the training and real estate of the Britannia Royal Naval College. From hawk day boats on the river and breakout spaces around the college for Officer Cadets, through to funding the live-streaming of the Passing-out Parades at the end of each term which truly reaches out around the world. What type of functions does the Britannia Association organise?

The Britannia Association holds formal dinners, drink receptions and on occasions less formal gatherings, throughout the year at various venues around the UK. From Britannia Royal Naval College we receive an allocation of tickets for each end of term ball which normally occur in April, August and December. We welcome ideas from members for different events and venues.

Are events only held at Britannia Royal Naval College?

No. The Britannia Association has a programme of events and functions around the UK in a variety of venues. We always welcome invites from serving officer members to hold a reception in their mess.

Can I stay in the college for events?

Unfortunately, Britannia Royal Naval College does not have the capacity to offer accommodation to Britannia Association members attending college events. Preferential rates are offered by the Dart Marina Hotel and the Townstal Farm House Hotel to members of the Britannia Association if the establishments are advised at time of booking.

Where else do you hold social functions?

Social functions are held in a variety of venues around the UK. Previously we had gathered at The House of Lords, onboard HM Ships Belfast and Victory and enjoyed the splendour of HMY Britannia in Leith. All Britannia Association members enjoy affiliate membership of the ‘RAG’ club in London. Suggestions for events and venues are always welcomed from the membership.

How many functions are there during a year?

There is no set number of functions although there is normally a formal dinner each year.

Do my contact details have to be made available to all members?

Access to the membership data base is available subject to use of individual membership login and password. The amount of information displayed to the membership is entirely within your control.

Are my details likely to be passed on to other organisations?

No. It is not the policy of the Britannia Association to share membership details with any other organisation. The Britannia Association complies and is regulated by the Data Protection Act of 2018 (GDPR)

What can I contribute to the Britannia Association?

All members contribute their individual experience from both service and civilian life. The Britannia Association welcomes ideas and suggestions from all members for events, activities and possible development. It is hoped all Britannia Association members will ‘spread the word’ to encourage friends who address the eligibility criteria to consider joining the Britannia Association. 

How do I get to Britannia Royal Naval College?

Rail: nearest rail station is Totnes (National Rail enquiries 08457 484950)

Road: From Totnes take the Kingsbridge/Dartmouth Road (A381) to Halwell. Turn left at the church and follow the signs to Dartmouth. The College is approached down a very steep hill where the speed limit is 30 mph. The College Main Gate is on the left hand side at the bottom of the hill.
Air: The nearest airport to Britannia Royal Naval College is Exeter.
