The Army and Navy Club 36 Pall Mall, London, United Kingdom

Wednesday 18th September at 12.30 | £70*
*Includes one glass Prosecco and half bottle Wine

The next Bonny Lunch is on Wednesday 18th September at 12:30 for 13:00. The speaker is the celebrated military historian, Saul David. Saul will, fittingly for the date, be speaking to us on the Arnhem Campaign 17 to 26 September 1944. To coincide with the 80th anniversary of D-Day and Arnhem, Saul has very recently published “Sky Warriors: British Airborne Forces in the Second World War”.

A recent Sunday Times review states: “Sky Warriors is an accomplished act of storytelling; authoritative, far-reaching and deeply moving. Building the narrative from the ground-up, Saul David draws on multiple archives, published memoirs, unpublished diaries and letters, and interviews with participants.
The end result is a dramatic narrative of the airborne forces’ recruitment, training and wartime exploits.” He is bringing a few books with him and will be happy to do a signing session after lunch.

The RAG Club Member Events – Cigars on the terrace

The Army and Navy Club 36 Pall Mall, London, United Kingdom

Thursday 19th September at 18.30 | Ribbon Bar & Terrace | £30.00

After a summer of hopefully many opportunities to enjoy the best that Cuba offers, Rag devotees of the mother island’s finest are welcomed back to the Ribbon Terrace for a Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 3, combined with something in your glass to dovetail. This selection, thanks for which is once again due to Hunters & Frankau, is the latest addition to the Epicure range after a decade-hiatus, and is already well noted as a cigar to enjoy alone or as a preface to supper.  Light enough to engage newcomers yet seasoned and rich in flavours sufficient to more than satisfy any aficionado. In all, an evening to ease you back into the reality ahead of Autumn weeks after hopefully a restorative Summer.

The RAG Club Member Events – Fireside chat with Simon Murray

The Army and Navy Club 36 Pall Mall, London, United Kingdom

Tuesday 24th September at 18.30 | The Drawing Room | £15.00 per person*
*Includes one glass Prosecco

When Simon Murray appeared on Radio 4’s “Desert Island Discs”, the luxury for which he asked ahead of being cast away was “lots of pens and paper”. That is the least he would need to sketch out a life of three parts, all of which should be celebrated as one, with each constituent part also standing alone.

First, he served in the French Foreign Legion during the Algerian War, experiencing combat at close quarters. Then he began a business career in Asia and Hong Kong – where he advised the Governor Chris Patten during the return of the former British colony to China – and sat on the boards of Vodafone, Tommy Hilfiger, Hermes, and America’s General Electric, among others. He also formed the telecommunication concern, Orange, which was ultimately  sold for $36 billion. Not satisfied by all that, next up he became, at 64, the oldest man to reach the South Pole unsupported (which is, whisper it, almost as impressive as his wife, Jennifer, becoming the first women to circumnavigate the globe in a helicopter).

Join Simon, an acclaimed author and broadcaster, at the Drawing Room fireplace for a romp through his trilogy on earth packed into an hour of conversation. Follow this, as is traditional with the Rag Fireside Chat, by joining a select group of members for supper with Simon in the Coffee Room, where dialogue will continue wherever the table wishes to take things.
